Which trees are protected in Cambridge?
Trees about 8m tall or 32cm trunk (council states ~100cm trunk circumference) or larger are generally protected and need approval.
LPP 3.25 protects regulated trees on private land in residential areas zoned R30 and below. Regulated tree: minimum height 8m OR single trunk with circumference >= 1m (100cm) measured 1.4m above ground. Approved for advertising Sept 2024; final adoption status as of June 2026 not confirmed in available sources. Applies via Local Planning Policy framework, not local law. Scheme amendment refused by Minister July 2024, council proceeded with policy instead.
